A history of Ararat High School 1913 - 1988. Published in 1988 celebrating the 75th anniversary of the school.
MUSIC PROGRAM
Participation in the school bands can be exciting and rewarding and often students choose to perform in a variety of ensembles. Each year the Arts group presents a musical in which up to 100 students participate. Staff and students of the secondary college have written some of the Musicals performed and other schools throughout Australia have performed these. Students are given the opportunity to travel with the music groups and gain much from the experiences.
Tuition costs $90 per year. This is one of the cheapest fees charged by any school in Australia to our knowledge and the cost covers insurance of instruments, purchase of all music for lessons and bands, repairs of instruments for general wear and tear, and part of the cost of accompaniments for exams. This amount is actually less than the cost of a single tutor (Music book) for the beginning drummers!
Ararat College does not hire instruments and recommends purchase of instruments to parents who would like their child to have their own, however parents who would prefer to hire an instrument can contact a reputable hire company through the school.
Some students choose to take Australian Music Examinations at this college as a way to structure their learning and as a way to receive external assessment by Australia's premiere music examination body. The A.M.E.B. exams can allow students entry into many community bands and are an excellent preparation for a professional career in music. Please note that there are additional costs for undertaking A.M.E.B. Exams and these are not covered in our tuition fee.
Ararat College offers a strong music program with many students participating in a large variety of musical instruments.
Music can be a great way for people to spend time on their own, but it can also be a great way to spend time with others. Participation in the school band can be very exciting and rewarding. There are a variety of different ensembles, and students may choose to form their own band with supervised rehearsals at lunch times.
Students will be given the opportunity to travel and perform with these music groups. This is a great opportunity for both personal and social growth and can result in a massive improvement in ability throughout a student’s total education.
TUITION
Tuition costs $110 and covers lessons for the entire year. Please note that this fee cannot be refunded once your child commences lessons.
INSTRUMENTS
Ararat College recommends the purchase of instruments for a child that would like to have their own. Learning an instrument requires lots of practice, and while much can be achieved practicing at school, the best chance for improvement comes with the ability to practice at home. Parents contemplating the purchase of instruments should also get advice before purchasing instruments to avoid buying something of poor quality.
It is possible for students in year 7 and 8 to take a free loan of an instrument from the school. There are a number of instruments at Ararat College, however they are not unlimited so there may be a waiting period for some requests. This can be a great opportunity for parents to find out if their child wishes to continue before making a purchase.
A.M.E.B. EXAMS
Some students choose to take Australian Music Examinations at Ararat College as a way to structure their learning and to receive external assessment by Australia’s premiere music examination body. The A.M.E.B. exams can allow students entry into many community bands and are an excellent preparation for a professional career in music.
