P.A.R.T.Y. Program and Spinchat

This week our Year 10 students commenced the PARTY Program for 2018 with a visit from Robbie Peime from Spinchat

What is P.A.R.T.Y.? Alfred 2018

P.A.R.T.Y. is a trauma prevention program aimed at young people aged 15-25. Trauma is defined as an injury that has been caused by physical force such as motor vehicle crash, falls and assaults. P.A.R.T.Y. seeks to give participants a snapshot of the possible traumatic and often preventable consequences of risk-related behaviour that can lead to traumatic injury.

P.A.R.T.Y. was first developed in 1986 at the Sunnybrook Health Services Centre in Toronto, Canada by Emergency Department staff who were concerned at the large number of young people impacted by preventable traumatic injury being treated in their unit. The P.A.R.T.Y. program is now operated by staff at established trauma hospitals at over 100 sites around the world. Our program has been based on this program, focusing on a local level. Robbie Peime story: Spinchat

On Tuesday the 4th September we were really fortunate to have Robbie Peime and his trusty dog “Lenny” from Spin Chat presented to our year 10 students on his lived experience with a spinal cord injury. Spin Chat is an initiative of Independence Australia and aims to promote prevention and educate secondary school students about spinal cord injury.

Robbie stated to the students that “My life changed forever when I was 17, I was involved in a head-on collision between a car and the motorbike I was riding. I was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition”. His presentation was an amazingly honest and candid account of the lived experiences. He faced his difficulties within his life truthfully and with courage, he was a true inspiration to us all. To read more of Robbie’s story please visit www.spinchat.org.au
