Prizes

One Chinese and one Australian student, accompanied by an adult(teacher/parent/guardian), will be selected to present their writing to the conference delegates in Shanghai. In addition a selection of writings will be featured in a magazine to be distributed to participating schools and conference delegates.
All participating students will be acknowledged for this contribution to the project. Teachers will be forwarded two certificates; one to acknowledge the 10 students whose writing was selected for entry in the project and a further certificate for all students who produced writing for consideration.

(Winning entrants and their accompanying adult will be provided with transportation to Shanghai, twin share accommodation for five nights, conference registration(if desired) and most meals. Note that the cost of some meals, insurance - health and travel, vaccinations, visa, passport and some transfers are not included.) Only entries from Chinese and Australian schools will be eligible for the prizes.

Theme "My life - our future"

Chinese and Australian students exploring this theme could consider their hopes and aspirations for their future within the context of living, working and learning globally and in particular in the Asian region. Some possible issues for exploration include; the nature and importance of education, employment options, globalisation, relationships, the role of the family in society, the impact of new technologies, issues relating to the environment.

Selection of Winning Entries

Museum Victoria in consultation with the Linking Latitudes 2001:Shanghai and China Steering Committee and a representative of I*EARN China will select the winning entries. The winning students and accompanying adults must be able to travel to Shanghai April 15-18, 2001.

Entries will be judged on the following selection criteria:

  • writer's ability to reflect upon their hopes and aspirations in the context of living, working and learning globally and in particular in the Asian region
  • quality of the writing(grammar, spelling and expression)
  • ability to write for a wide audience demonstrating crosss-cultural sensitivity
  • ability to inspire and engage the audience
  • clarity of expresssion and originality of thought
Project aims

This project will aim to :

  • link Australian and Chinese students' through their writings about their hopes and aspirations for the future
  • increase knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues in China and Australia
  • develop students' writing skills

Students from Chinese middle and high schools and Australian secondary schools are invited to contribute quality student writing to this project by December 1, 2000. Entries will be published on the project web site, and selected entries will be published in a magazine and the two winning entries will be presented by the Chinese and Australian authors at the Linking Latitudes 2001 Conference, Shanghai.
